The Payson High culinary arts students took home the top chef honors
from the 13th annual Taste of Rim Country this weekend.
The annual Taste of Rim Country at the Payson Public Library was a
sellout. The fund-raiser, presented by the Library Friends of Payson
featured several chefs from around the Rim Country sharing samples
of their food, plus wine, music, a silent auction and 50-50 drawing.
The March 5 event, a fund-raiser by the Library Friends of Payson for
the Payson Public Library, attracted 230 guests and chefs from around
the Rim Country.
Guests voted for their favorites.
As winners of the event, the students receive tickets to the April
2011 Cooks & Corks Scottsdale Culinary Festival and were each given a
cookbook from library director Terry Morris’ private collection. Every
chef in the event was given a ticket to another Scottsdale Culinary
Festival event, the Great Arizona Picnic, also in April 2011.
Morris said the students brought Guatemalan salsa, a mango sorbet,
tortilla soup and a wrap. A total of 13 students contributed to the
production of the food brought to the event.
The top prize for the evening was awarded the students of the Payson
High School culinary arts program, represented by Leticia Martinez,
left, and Nilka Carranza. In total 13 students contributed to the
offerings at the PHS station.
“Their table setting was great and they even brought the Longhorn
mascot,” Morris said.
In addition to the tickets sold, the event brought in about $1,800
from the silent auction and almost $200 in a 50-50 raffle.
