The Library Friends of Payson, Inc

MISSION:  The Library Friends of Payson, Inc., is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide financial and community support to the Payson Public Library. We believe that public libraries comprise an integral aspect of community identity and development, and we support endeavors that encourage literacy and free inquiry within the individual, the family, and society.

HISTORY:  Like many of Rim Country's finest service organizations, "The Library Friends" were established as a 'grassroots' effort to support the growing Payson Public Library.

We have evolved from just providing books -- to purchasing computers and other equipment & funding Public Library programs that would not otherwise be covered in its Town and County budget.

SERVICES WE PROVIDE: We offer a Free Library Services for Homebound Individuals - through our "Library Buddy Program." We also purchase books and supplies for Payson Public Library.

PROJECTS WE SPONSOR:  We are an Annual Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce Business  Showcase participant.

We maintain the LFOP bookstore (a used bookstore in the Payson Public Library). Staffing is done entirely by volunteers.

Another year has quickly passed and it’s time to think of escaping the hot kitchen and eating at Chili’s!  Starting next week on Wednesday, May 3, Chili’s in Payson will give 15% of your bill to the Library Friends if you eat there anytime from opening to closing.  This Give-Back day will occur on the first Wednesday of each month through October.  All you have to do is present the attached coupon to your server (one coupon per bill, so copy what you need).

Make life easy for yourself and at the same time help out the library. Right now, while you’re thinking about it, why not mark your calendar so you’ll remember the Give Back days at Chili’s: May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6 and October 4.

See you at Chili’s on May 3!

LFOP Meeting  May 15, 2017

On Monday,  May 15, 2017, the Library Friends of Payson are pleased to have Evangeline Parsons-Yazzie from the AZ Humanities Council present a program on Indian boarding schools, “Boarded Up: Social and Historical Interpretations of the American Indian Boarding School Era.” This presentation will impart a social interpretation of how life among Indian Nations began to change due to the plight American Indian people were forced into in the name of education. Children were placed in a boarding school and not allowed to speak their language or practice their culture.  This presentation is from an American Indian perspective.

Dr. Evangeline Parsons-Yazzie is a Professor Emeritus at Northern Arizona University. Retiring after teaching for 24 years, Evangeline became a writer of novels and short stories. She wrote a novel based upon the Navajo Long Walk that tells the story of a Navajo family and their struggles.  She also wrote a book of stories and poems with her daughter. Evangeline is a Navajo woman, originally from Hardrock on the Navajo Reservation.

Dr. Parsons-Yazzie will bring copies of two of her novels and her book of poems to sell. The book of poems is $11.00, and the novels are $24.00. She also has a textbook on the Navajo language, Rediscovering the Navajo Language, available for $98.00. She accepts cash only.

The Library Friends of Payson presentation for the community, which is held in the library meeting room, will start with a short business meeting at 10:00 a.m., and the program begins at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to both the business meeting and the free one hour program. A special invitation is extended to high school and college students.  If you have any questions, please call the library at 928-474-9260.

Library Friends of Payson, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, supports the library with programs and materials not covered by the town budget. COME JOIN US.
